NACD Sponsoring Cargo Tank Rollover Summits with DOT

At the request of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), NACD is sponsoring a series of three Cargo Tank Rollover Summits along with the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) and several other trade associations.

NACD Members and Affiliates are encouraged to participate in these FREE summits to be held

November 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in St. Louis, MO, at the Renaissance Grand Hotel

November 28 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Baltimore, MD, at the new Westin BWI Airport Hotel

December 4 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Oakland, CA, at the Marriott City Center

The U.S. DOT now considers tank truck rollovers and the release of hazardous materials in those rollovers as one of its top safety concerns. The agency estimates that there are between three and six tank truck rollovers every day.

The Summits have several objectives. They will focus industry attention on the need to reduce the frequency of rollovers. The recently released Cargo Tank Roll Stability Study found that, “Rollovers occur in more than two-thirds of the serious single-vehicle crashes of cargo tank motor vehicles.” Most of these rollover crashes are preventable. More than 78% of tank truck rollovers are the result of truck or automobile driver error. (To review the entire study, go to http://www.tanktruck.org, and click on “news and updates.”)

The Summits will provide an opportunity for experienced tank truck carrier and equipment manufacturer personnel to educate attendees on current training and management approaches to reducing rollovers. The Summits will also give industry and government an opportunity to solicit new ideas for rollover prevention from attendees, as well as to determine what tools they would like to see developed to combat rollovers.

At the conclusion of the Summits, DOT, NACD, NTTC, and other partners will work together to develop training and management tools for wide distribution. DOT intends to produce and distribute a free training DVD based on current information about rollover initiatives, as well as what is learned at the Summits. Carriers, insurance companies, shippers, and others will be welcome to copy these driver-oriented DVDs.
