Measuring the Impact of Responsible Distribution on Environmental, Health, Safety, & Security Performance

NACD Members:  Please click here to complete and submit the 2009 Membership & Safety Questionnaire.Your responses will be kept confidential.  Completion of the questionnaire is a condition of membership in NACD.  Deadline is March 31, 2010.

2008 NACD Membership and Performance Data/Indices of Performance Project:  NACD member companies made 5.2 million chemical distribution shipments, were responsible for 81 billion pounds of delivered product, and drove more than 199 million miles in the distribution of these chemicals throughout 2008."

These increases are remarkable in a down economy. NACD members operated lean this past year and were consistent in delivering timely products safely. A continued commitment to safety was demonstrated again in 2008. While miles driven and shipments rose over 2007 numbers, NACD member companies reduced reportable vehicular accidents or spills by an astonishing 75.7%, and recordable injuries due to vehicular accidents or transportation spills decreased by 46.2% from 2007, according to the 2008. NACD member companies make a delivery every 6 seconds with a fatality rate twice as good as DOT’s target goal.

NACD began the RDP Membership & Performance Data Project in 2001 to publicly report membership performance within measurable areas of health and safety. In addition to publicly reporting these results each year, NACD also publishes a separate performance report that focuses on members' environmental progress using data compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Both of these efforts help quantify the positive impact of Responsible Distribution and demonstrate the strong environmental, health, safety, and security commitment made by NACD members through Responsible Distribution.

In addition to publicly reporting this data, NACD also uses it to provide hard evidence to legislators and regulators, the media, community groups, suppliers, and other interested parties that NACD members, who practice Responsible Distribution as a condition of membership, have a positive and improving environmental, health, and safety record. Another benefit of the project is to give each NACD member company a way to measure their own performance against the Association as a whole.

Because 100% participation is so critical to the success of this project, the membership voted in 2006 to make annual completion and submission of the questionnaire mandatory for Regular membership in NACD. We are pleased to report that this requirement took effect with the 2005 questionnaire, and 100% participation was achieved for the last three consecutive years.

NACD is pleased to release the 2008 Membership & Performance Data Report. Some of these results are encouraging, but there are also areas where there are opportunities for improvement. With continued participation of all NACD Regular members, the Association will be able to establish credible data spanning multiple years. NACD will use the data to determine whether additional changes can be made to Responsible Distribution and/or whether training programs can be developed to assist members in improving performance.

Environmental Performance

NACD's chemical distributor members consistently outperform non-NACD distributor members in toxic releases to the environment. Using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's annual Toxics Release Inventory report as a benchmark, NACD member facilities consistently demonstrate that their commitment to Responsible Distribution makes a difference.

What the EPA Data Show

According to the EPA’s report, chemical distribution companies reported an average release of toxic emissions per facility approximately 75% less than the textiles industry, and 90% less than the plastics and rubber industry. NACD member companies, through their participation in Responsible Distribution, had a per facility disposal average that was 18% less than non-NACD member companies.  For more information about the positive environmental progress being demonstrated by NACD's Responsible Distribution members, click on the December 2009 press release.
