Measuring the Impact of the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM on Environmental, Health, Safety, & Security Performance
2007 NACD RDP Membership and Performance Data/Indices of Performance Project
NACD member companies announced reportable vehicular accidents or spills decreased by almost 19%, and recordable injuries due to vehicular accidents or transportation spills decreased by 23.5% from 2006, according to the just-released 2007 NACD Membership & Performance Data Report.
NACD began the RDP Membership & Performance Data Project in 2001 to publicly report membership performance within measurable areas of health and safety. In addition to publicly reporting these results each year, NACD also publishes a separate performance report that focuses on members' environmental progress using data compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Both of these efforts help quantify the positive impact of the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM (RDP) and demonstrate the strong environmental, health, safety, and security commitment made by NACD members through RDP.
In addition to publicly reporting this data, NACD also uses it to provide hard evidence to legislators and regulators, the media, community groups, suppliers, and other interested parties that NACD members, who practice RDP as a condition of membership, have a positive and improving environmental, health, and safety record. Another benefit of the project is to give each NACD member company a way to measure their own performance against the Association as a whole.
Because 100% participation is so critical to the success of this project, the membership voted in 2006 to make annual completion and submission of the questionnaire mandatory for Regular membership in NACD. We are pleased to report that this requirement took effect with the 2005 questionnaire, and 100% participation was achieved for the last three consectutive years.
NACD is pleased to release the 2007 report. Some of these results are encouraging, but there are also areas where there are opportunities for improvement. With continued participation of all NACD Regular members, the Association will be able to establish credible data spanning multiple years. NACD will use the data to determine whether additional changes can be made to RDP and/or whether training programs can be developed to assist members in improving performance.

Environmental Performance
NACD's chemical distributor members consistently outperform non-NACD distributor members in toxic releases to the environment. Using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's annual Toxics Release Inventory report as a benchmark, NACD issues a detailed analysis that tracks this performance. Each year, NACD member facilities consistently demonstrate that their commitment to the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM makes a difference.
What the EPA Data Show
- Toxic releases among NACD members facilities are lower today than they were seven years ago, when EPA first required the chemical distribution industry to report annual releases.
- Average toxic releases per NACD member facility have declined every year.
- Most member facility releases are small when compared to non-member facilities as well as to facilities in other industries.
- The chemical distribution industry remains among the lowest sources of toxic releases into the environment among all industries required to report under TRI. Among the 21 industries require to report, chemical distribution ranks next to last in quantities released. For years, the industry ranked last, giving it the distrinction of being the smallest source of emissions.
